It is a commonly heard complaint from visitors that there is not much to go and visit in Yangon expect Pagoda and temples. That is not true. Yangon has some museums and houses that exhibit the rich cultural heritage of the country and the life of outstanding persons as well as a few oddities.
National Museum
Located on Pyay Road, and it has five floors of exhibits displaying the artifacts of various ancient periods, Manuscripts, traditional dresses of different ethnic groups, traditional musical instruments, paintings. The main attraction of the National Museum is the impressive Lion’s Throne that was used by Myanmar Kings to adjudicate on Law cases. It is over 150 years old and made of Yamanay wood and gilded all over. It is opened daily from 9 am to 4 pm except for Monday.
Drugs Eradication Museum
This museum was built in the late 1990s as part of the previous government’s campaign to show how seriously they were taking the drug problem in the country. The museum is set up into three different floors with each floor conveying a different aspect of drugs in Myanmar
The dome-shaped Planetarium in People’s Park opened in 1987 as a gift from the Japanese government.
Bogyoke Aung San Museum
The museum, located in Bahan Township, was Gen.Aung San’s last residence before his assassination in 1947. The colonial-era, two-story building, was built in 1921 and is where his daughter Aung San Suu Kyi grew up together with his two elder brothers.
The museum mostly displays memorabilia such as clothes, books, family photos, and his car. It closes on Monday and public holidays.
U Thant’s House
Like Bogyoke Aung San Museum, U Thant’s house is also a museum of an individual. U Thant, the former Secretary-General of the United Nations (1961-1971), is a revered figure in Myanmar. The house was where he lived before he started as the Secretary-General. The first floor has a room where you can watch the original speeches of U Thant with a projector. It surrounded by a big garden on 1.5 acres where public event space with lectures and seminars usually held. It is open only on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Gems Museum
It is located on Kaba Aye Pogoda road and displays famous precious stones of Myanmar such as rubies, jades, Sapphires, and pearls. It also houses the gems Mart and sells raw gemstones and various kind of jewelry.
