Hpa-an is the capital of Kayin State, about 279 km south of Yangon. This small picturesque town is easily accessible by car and six hours drive from Yangon. Most of its inhabitants are Kayin ethnic e people. Myawaddy, a border crossing point with Thailand is 3-hour drive from Hpa-an.

The surrounding limestone caves to explore and mountains to enjoy superb 360-degree panoramic views of surrounding region and the laid back atmosphere are the highlights of the area.


THE CAVES

Sadan cave
This stunning Sadan Cave opens into a gigantic cavern filled with Buddha and pagodas and can be walked all the way through to the other side. It is the longest cave around Hpa an. Sadan is the name of elephant which was famous at Buddha’s Jataka tales. Natural stone rocks, stalactites, and stalagmites look like the head, nose, and body of an elephant. Hence the cave was called Sadan caves.


Kawgun cave
It is a natural limestone cave located near Kawgun village and measures 61 m in height, and 91m in length.it is renounce a massive collection of thousands of terracotta votive tablets and Buddha images some dating back as far as the seven century.


Yathae Pyan Cave
It is located on the hill not far from Kawgun cave. The cave is located in the southern part of the hill and about 150 feet height from the foot of the mountain. The concrete steps lead up to the cave.it is natural cave with two openings.


Bat Cave
A small cave is a natural habitat of bats and situated 9 km away from Hpa An. At the time of the sunset, thousands and thousands of bats are going out for foods. The view of thousands of bat s stream out of cave gives you a real sense of breathtaking.


Kaw ka Thaung cave
Situated about 1.26 km at the south of Hpa-an, this cave is naturally decorated with stalactites and stalagmites and 90 feet long one entrance cave.

The nearby swimming area provides an opportunity to cool you off after a day of exploring, and offers lovely views of the surrounding rice paddies and mountains, and it is possible to go kayaking in surrounding paddy fields during raining season.


THE MOUNTAINS

Mt.Zwegabin
Mount Zwegabin is one of the most sacred mountains in the country. It has a very unusual shape and Iconic landmark of Kayin ethnic people. Ascending to the top will take two hours, and you can enjoy the fabulous and spectacular views of the surrounding area. There is a pagoda that sits atop it.


Kyaik Kalap
It is located near Mt.Zwegabin and a unique stupa, set on top of an unusual rock formation in the middle of artificial lake. It is one of the most amazing sights in Hpa-an.


Taung Wine Taung
A visit to Taung Wine Taung or mountain would be a nice trip around Hpa-an that require hiking. The panoramic view from the top is very fantastic.


Pha Pu Taung
It is located across the river and an excellent place to have a panoramic view of Hpa-an and its environs.
